Foundation Lead Dental Nursing Skills Programme

Foundation courses are forerunners for our Quality Assured programmes .

The Foundation courses allow learners to try out the learning experience we provide to see if our approach works for them. On completion, learners will be able to make an informed decision whether to proceed on to an Advanced or Higher course

Induction Activity   The Introductory programmes start with an induction activity to establish learners' current knowledge, experience, hopes and expectations from the course and will introduce learners to our online portal system and library of resources.

Duration    Approx. 4-6 weeks

Tuition       These programmes offers one-to-one, weekly 30 min tutorials with a named tutor. Tutorials are by appointment over the telephone, video call or zoom. In addition,  online videos are available from the course portal. An extensive online library and a wide range of eCPD are also available during the period of study

Learning Activities   Each tuition session will cover one or more blended learning activities. Which learners will complete and upload for feedback before their next tutorial.

IT requirements    Laptop or desktop running MS Word

Assessment      There are two assessment formats, Missing words assessment or assignments. The learner and tutor will agree on the correct format to complete the learning   activities. This will depend on whether the Advanced or Higher programme is most suitable for the learner's progression.

On completion,   Learners receive an in-house certificate and eCPD. Learners can transfer the £ 100-course fee to a relevant Advanced or Higher course.

About the course

Based on the four education domains stipulated by the General Dental Council (GDC), this introductory programme focuses on the following three domains:

  • Leadership and management
  • Communication
  • Professionalism

Teaching and Learning

This is a tutored distance learning programme in which, following a one-to-one tutorial, students complete Learning Activities for assessment. On completion of four Learning Activities, students produce an assignment to demonstrate learning in the context of their workplace. The programme has the following aims.

Aims

  • To introduce the nature and extent of extended duties and lead roles for dental nurses
  • To define lead roles in dental teams
  • To identify leadership and management approaches
  • To consider a range of communication skills

As a result of studying on this introductory course, students will be able to:

  • Recognise how to meet the GDC’s requirements for dental nurses in leadership and management roles
  • Specify the lead dental nurse role in their team
  • Apply a range of leadership and management skills
  • Determine communication techniques for the delivery of high-quality dental care to patients

As a result of this programme of study, participants will learn about themselves as leaders and managers, so that they can excel in their roles and realise benefits for patients, employers and colleagues.

This short course is designed to be a springboard for dental nurse managers and secure skills and knowledge they need to become more effective in their jobs.

The Gateway Course serves as an entry point to our extensive selection of courses. It provides participants with a structured introduction to the programme, ensuring they are adequately prepared to progress. It offers: Skill Check Assessment. As part of the Gateway Course, participants will undertake a skill check assessment. This process is designed to evaluate the essential learning skills required to advance further within the programme. Introduction to Teaching and Learning Methods Participants will receive an overview of our teaching and learning approaches, including workflows, tools, and communication styles. This introduction helps ensure that these methods align with your needs before you commit to an Advanced or Higher course. This course is delivered over 6 weeks, with the course fee including 6 weeks of tutor support. After this period, additional monthly packages of tutor support can be purchased if needed

Entry Requirements

• I understand that this course requires study at level 3. At this level students need to have English Functional Skills at Level 1. If my tutor advises me that my functional skills are not at this level I will be advised by my tutor on the required course of action. Which may involve additional functional skills training at my own cost.
• I have arranged to ringfence time for my tutorials- 30 mins per week and study time of at least 2 hours per week
• I can produce course work in the Microsoft Word Format
• I certify that the work I submit for my assignments will be my own work. I realise that to make a false claim of authenticity is malpractice and could be reported to the General Dental Council. In which case my registration could be at risk.

I found this course extremely helpful in explaining how I as a dental nurse can help to assist the dentists and the patient during a rubber dam procedure. I am interested in completing further training in placing rubber dam myself, especially with the current circumstances p.
