Foundation Skills for Lead Decontamination Nurses
Participants complete a learning styles assessment as part of their induction activity before commencing the course.
The course intends to provide a means by which participants can develop their knowledge, skills, and team role.
This Advanced programme offers opportunities for senior dental nurses to develop skills and knowledge to build their confidence by using best practice techniques for leading and developing teams of dental nurses. This programme offers twelve weeks of study (30 guided learning hours) covering:
- The dental education domains
- Lead roles in dental teams
- Leadership styles for Infection control leads
- Management approaches to Infection control leads
- Communication skills for Infection control leads
The programme is based on the four education domains stipulated by the General Dental Council, this programme focuses on the following three domains:
- Leadership and management
- Communication
- Professionalism
Teaching and Learning
This is a tutored, distance learning programme in which, following a one-to-one tutorial, students complete Learning Activities for assessment. On completion of four Learning Activities, students produce an assignment to demonstrate learning in the context of their workplace.
The programme aims to:
- Introduce the role and responsibilities of the Lead Decontamination Nurse
- Define the regulative framework for effective infection control in dental services
- Identify required processes and procedures for dental teams
- Consider ways to keep all systems and processes valid and effective
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognise how to meet the HTM requirements for dental infection control
- Specify how the decon lead supports the work of their colleagues
- Apply a range of communication and ongoing training measures
- Determine continual professional development requirements
