Advanced Skills for Decontamination Leads 

The programme aims to:

• Introduce the role and responsibilities of the Lead Decontamination Nurse
• Define the regulative framework for effective infection control in dental services
• Identify required processes and procedures for dental teams
• Consider ways to keep all systems and processes valid and effective
•  

As a result of studying this course, the student will be able to:

• Recognise how to meet the HTM requirements for dental infection control
• Specify how the decon lead supports the work of their colleagues
• Apply a range of communication and ongoing training measures
• Determine continual professional development requirements

Learning and Assessment

The first three units of this programme are the Advanced Level of this programme. On completion of these units' learners can opt to progress to the higher level by completing two additional units.

At the Advanced Level

The focus of the Advanced level covers regulations and required activities to maintain the appropriate levels of infection control for dental services. Tuition will enable all learners to complete each unit's Blended Learning Activities (BLA). On completing the BLA, work will be assessed to ensure learning is at the required level, through the completion of a missing words assessment. The pass level for these assessments is 80%.

Based on the results from the Advanced level assessment outcome, students can opt to progress to the Higher-level units. The focus of learning will be supervisory management skills required by Infection Control Leads to manage, teach, coach and mentor the team. Learning will consist of: 

• Blended Learning Activities
• Required work products
• An assignment covering the unit's outcomes
